How to Select Proper Specifications of Cellular Confinement Systems (CCS / Geocell)
How to Select Proper Specifications of Cellular Confinement Systems (CCS / Geocell)
This guideline can be directly used for foreign trade catalog, technical proposal and customer communication.
1. Select Cell Height (Most critical parameter)
Determined by load level, subgrade condition and project type
- 100 mm
Scenarios: Slope protection, river ecological revetment, mine dump restoration, light-duty gravel driveway, landscape slope.
Feature: Shallow cavity, mainly for soil fixation, anti-erosion and ecological greening, **not for heavy-load subgrade**.
- 150 mm
Scenarios: Provincial highway soft subgrade reconstruction, old-new subgrade splicing, farm access road, light truck parking yard, residential driveway.
Feature: Balanced performance for medium traffic; the most widely used universal specification for road engineering.
- 200 mm / 250 mm / 300 mm
Scenarios: Mine permanent haul roads, logistics container yards, heavy industrial storage areas, extremely weak deep soft foundation.
Feature: Deep cell structure, thicker composite cushion, bear repeated heavy dynamic loads.
2. Choose Sheet Thickness & Tensile Grade
Thicker sheet brings higher creep resistance and tensile capacity
- 1.0–1.2 mm (Standard grade)
Private driveway, landscape slope, temporary ecological projects, passenger car access only.
Weld peel strength ≥8 kN/m.
- 1.3–1.5 mm (Medium heavy-duty)
Provincial/municipal road subgrade, river fluctuation zone revetment, mine ecological slope.
Weld peel strength ≥8–10 kN/m.
- 1.6–1.8 mm (High tensile heavy-duty)
Open-pit mine haul roads, heavy vehicle yards, projects with long-term sustained load.
High tensile CCS, weld peel strength ≥10–14 kN/m, excellent anti-creep performance.
3. Decide: Perforated or Non-perforated (Solid Textured)
Non-perforated / Solid textured CCS
✅ Embossed surface improves friction between sheet and aggregate
✅ Best for dry subgrade, highway base, mine haul road, heavy load pavement
❌ Not suitable for waterlogged foundation or vegetation growing projects
Perforated CCS
✅ Drainage holes release pore water, reduce hydrostatic pressure
✅ Allow plant root penetration
✅ Apply to river revetment, water-level fluctuation zone, wet soft foundation, ecological slope restoration
❌ Not recommended for ultra-heavy load roads without drainage requirements
4. Welding Spacing
Common options: 330 mm / 380 mm / 440 mm / 445 mm / 500 mm
- Smaller welding spacing → Smaller single cell area → Higher overall rigidity, stronger anti-deformation capacity
- 330~380 mm: Steep slope, river revetment, projects with large tension force
- 440~445 mm: Road subgrade, driveway, general engineering (cost balance)
- Larger spacing: Lighter weight, lower cost, for gentle slope & light-duty projects
5. Raw Material Selection
1. Modified Virgin HDPE (First choice for permanent engineering)
Added with carbon black, UV stabilizer and antioxidant. Resist aging, acid, alkali, freeze-thaw. Design service life: 50–75 years.
Suitable: highway, water conservancy, mine permanent works.
2. Recycled HDPE
Only for temporary low-standard projects; not recommended for public infrastructure.
