How to choose geotextile weight (g/m²) for my project?
How to choose geotextile weight (g/m²) for my project?
Geotextile mass per unit area (g/m²) is one of the core indicators, directly related to tensile strength, puncture resistance, filtration and anti‑clogging performance.
1. Road subbase / separation & stabilization
- General rural road: 100–150 g/m²
- Highway / heavy‑haul yard road: 200–300 g/m²
2. Soft foundation, drainage & filtration
- Plastic drainage board matching, soft soil drainage: 150–200 g/m²
- River slope, revetment, drainage layer: 200–300 g/m²
3. Landfill, geomembrane protection cushion (very important)
- Protective layer for HDPE geomembrane: 300–600 g/m²
- Bottom protection of landfill: ≥400 g/m²; cover layer: 200–300 g/m²
4. Slope erosion control, vegetation greening
- Gentle slope: 100–150 g/m²
- Steep slope / rainfall intensive area: 200–250 g/m²
5. Water conservancy, dyke, river regulation
- Filter for levee: 200–300 g/m²
- Anti‑scour revetment: 300–400 g/m²
Key principles
- Staple fiber needle‑punched geotextile: Mainly for filtration, drainage, separation; commonly 100–600 g/m².
- Filament (polyester) geotextile: Higher tensile & puncture resistance, preferred for heavy load, high‑requirement projects.
- Higher g/m² ≠ always better: Too heavy will reduce water permeability and increase cost. Match with soil particle size, hydraulic gradient and load requirements.
