Geogrid is a basic geosynthetic material that has unique properties and functions compared to other geosynthetics. It is widely used as a reinforcing element in reinforced soil structures or as reinforcement in composite materials. Geogrids are divided into four main categories: plastic geogrids, steel-plastic geogrids, fiberglass geogrids and warp knitted polyester geogrids.
Geogrids are two-dimensional mesh structures or three-dimensional lattice screens with a certain height, formed by thermoplastic molding or injection molding from high molecular weight polymers such as polypropylene and polyvinyl chloride. When used in civil engineering work, they are called geogrids.
Polymer mesh materials formed by drawing into square or rectangular cells, depending on the direction of drawing during the production process, are divided into uniaxial and biaxial. They are made by punching holes in extruded polymer sheets (usually polypropylene or high-density polyethylene) and then oriented drawing under heat. Uniaxial geogrids are stretched only along the length of the sheet, while biaxially oriented geogrids are obtained by additional stretching of a uniaxial geogrid in a direction perpendicular to its length.
During the production process, polymer macromolecules in plastic geogrids are redistributed and oriented under the influence of heat and stretching, which strengthens intermolecular bonds and increases the overall strength of the material. Their relative elongation is only 10–15% of the elongation of the original sheet material. The addition of anti-aging components, such as carbon black, to geogrids provides high durability, including resistance to acids, alkalis, corrosion and aging.

Polyester warp-knit geogrids are made from high-strength polyester fibers. Thanks to the use of an oriented warp-knitted structure, the warp and weft threads in the fabric have no bends. Warp-knit geogrids made from high-strength polyester fibers are characterized by high tensile strength, low elongation, high tear resistance, minimal difference in strength in the longitudinal and transverse directions, and resistance to ultraviolet aging, abrasion and corrosion.
