Honeycomb geocell subgrade reinforcement

· Lateral Confinement Effect

After unfolding and filling with gravel, aggregate or sand, each honeycomb cell locks filler tightly and restricts lateral expansion of granular materials under vehicle load. The loose filler forms an integrated rigid slab with high overall stiffness.

· Uniform Stress Distribution

Concentrated vertical wheel load is dispersed to a wider subsoil area, greatly reducing vertical compressive stress on soft subgrade.

Honeycomb Geocell for Subgrade Reinforcement Full Introduction

1. Basic Definition

Honeycomb geocell for subgrade reinforcement is a three-dimensional cellular confinement system (CCS) made of UV-stabilized HDPE sheets connected by ultrasonic hot welding. It is specially applied to strengthen highway, railway, parking lot and mine road subgrades to solve soft foundation settlement, rutting and uneven deformation.

2. Working Mechanism for Subgrade Reinforcement

· Reduced Differential Settlement

The integral geocell mattress balances uneven foundation bearing capacity, controls post-construction settlement and avoids road surface cracking and rutting.

· Capillary Cut-off & Drainage (perforated type)

Perforated geocell discharges pore water in weak soil, lowers water content of subgrade soil and improves soil bearing capacity.

3. Main Specifications for Road Subgrade

· Geocell height: 100mm / 150mm / 200mm (150mm is the most widely used for highway subgrade)

· Sheet thickness: 1.2mm–1.8mm (heavy-load mine road ≥1.5mm)

· Welding spacing: 400–660mm

· Material: Modified black HDPE with anti-oxidation and anti-UV additives

· Surface: Textured for higher friction between geocell and aggregate; perforated for drainage on wet soft soil

4. Core Advantages for Subgrade Reinforcement

(1) Excellent Bearing Capacity Improvement

Raise subgrade bearing capacity by 2–3 times; effectively treat muddy soil, silt, collapsible loess and filled soft ground.

(2) Reduce Base Thickness & Save Aggregate

Replace thick gravel cushion. The required aggregate layer thickness can be cut by 50%~80%, largely reducing stone mining and transportation costs.

(3) Low Transportation & Fast Construction

Foldable structure cuts transport volume by over 80%; lightweight, easy manual laying without large heavy machinery, shorten construction period by 30%+.

(4) Long-Term Durability

HDPE resists acid, alkali, freeze-thaw and vehicle fatigue load; service life reaches 50–75 years without aging and cracking.

(5) Reduce Post-Construction Maintenance

Minimize road rutting, cracking and uneven settlement, drastically lower later pavement repair cost.

5. Typical Application Scenarios

· Highway & Railway Subgrade

Soft foundation reinforcement, road widening reconstruction, transition section between bridge and road.

· Heavy-Duty Yard Ground

Logistics storage yards, container yards, airport apron, large parking lots.

· Temporary & Mine Haul Roads

Mining transport roads, construction temporary roads, gravel access driveways.

· Municipal Engineering

Urban branch roads, community driveways, sponge city permeable pavement base.

· Landfill Access Roads & Platforms

Reinforce covering soil foundation on landfill sites.

6. Standard Construction Steps

· Level and compact original subsoil; lay non-woven geotextile as separation layer to prevent soil and aggregate mixing.

· Unfold honeycomb geocell and fix edges with ground nails to keep fully stretched.

· Fill cells with graded gravel layer by layer, compact each layer with roller.

· Pave upper base layer and asphalt/concrete surface layer after geocell mattress forms stable reinforced composite layer.
