Plastic Honeycomb Geocell (HDPE Plastic Geocell) Full Introduction
1. Basic Definition & Production
Plastic honeycomb geocell, short for geocell, is a three-dimensional honeycomb-shaped geosynthetic material, mainly made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) (minor PP/polyester versions available).
Manufacturing Process
· High-strength HDPE sheets (textured or perforated) are connected via ultrasonic hot welding, lock buckle or integrated molding to form continuous cellular units.
· It is foldable and compact for transportation; expand on-site to form a stable honeycomb grid, then filled with soil, gravel, aggregate or concrete to form a rigid reinforced composite layer.
· Compliant standard: GB/T 19274-2024 (Chinese national standard for plastic geocells).
2. Core Technical Specifications
Main Sizes
· Cell depth (height): 50mm / 100mm / 150mm / 200mm / 250mm / 300mm (the most widely used: 100–200mm)
· Welding pitch (cell span): 330mm, 400mm, 500mm, 660mm, 800mm, 1000mm
· Sheet thickness: 0.8mm ~ 2.0mm (heavy-load projects adopt ≥1.5mm)
· Colors: Black (UV anti-aging), green, tan/brown, customized colors
· Types by surface: Solid sheet / perforated sheet (perforated for drainage & vegetation root penetration) / textured surface (increase friction with infill)
Key Mechanical Performance
· Tensile strength of sheet ≥20kN/m
· Weld node peel strength ≥8kN/m (core index for structural durability)
· Working temperature range: -40℃ ~ +70℃
· Anti-UV, anti-acid & alkali corrosion, anti-microbial degradation; design service life ≥50–75 years
3. Working Principle: 3D Lateral Confinement
Loose sand, soil and gravel easily shift, deform and sink under vehicle or embankment load.
After geocell is expanded and filled:
· Each honeycomb cell locks infill materials to restrict lateral expansion & sliding;
· Concentrated vertical load is dispersed evenly to the subgrade, greatly improving overall stiffness;
· Form a lightweight rigid mattress, reduce foundation settlement by 40%–65%, and lift bearing capacity up to 2–3 times compared with unreinforced soil.
4. Main Advantages
① Transportation & Construction
· Foldable compression: transport volume reduced by over 80%, low logistics cost;
· Lightweight, easy unfolding by manual work, no large heavy machinery required; fast laying & filling, shorten construction period by 30%+.
② Engineering Performance
· Solve soft foundation, muddy soil, collapsible loess, desert sand stabilization;
· Anti-rutting for unpaved roads, anti-sliding & anti-erosion for steep slopes;
· Perforated version realizes natural rainwater infiltration, fit for sponge city & ecological greening.
③ Economic & Environmental
· Replace thick gravel cushion or concrete base; cut base filling thickness by 50%–80%, save aggregate consumption;
· Use local on-site soil/sand as infill, reduce quarry exploitation & transportation carbon emission by 60%–80%;
· Vegetation can grow inside cells for slope greening, realize ecological restoration; recyclable HDPE raw material.
④ Durability
Resist freeze-thaw cycles, seawater corrosion, chemical wastewater, long-term outdoor exposure without cracking or aging.
