Project Overview: The driveway has a total length of 120 m and width of 6 m, covering a total area of 720 ㎡. It features a high groundwater table with significant frost‑heave risk in winter, and permits an axle load of 3 tons. Local codes mandate permeable pavement. Concrete and asphalt solutions were discarded due to high carbon emissions and poor drainage performance.
Engineering Pain Points: Elevated groundwater level, freeze‑thaw cycles, rutting tendency of conventional crushed‑stone driveways, and large surface runoff.
Selected HDPE Geocell Specification: 100 mm cell height, 1.5 mm sheet thickness, virgin HDPE material; matched with 600 g/㎡ non‑woven geotextile; infill: 20‑40 mm angular granite crushed stone (compliant with European Standard EN13242).
Key Construction Points
‑ Excavate subgrade to 35 cm depth and compact to 95% Proctor density;
‑ Lay geotextile for separation and filtration;
‑ Unfold and secure HDPE geocell with anchoring pins;
‑ Fill and compact crushed stone to fully fill cells, and overlay an extra 2‑3 cm crushed‑stone wearing course on the surface.
Measured Performance Outcome
‑ Bearing capacity reaches 500 kPa, complying with road specification requirements;
‑ Permeability rate: 1200 L/m²/h, far exceeding 300 L/m²/h of plain crushed‑stone driveway;
