Working Principle of HDPE Cellular Confinement System

Working Principle

1. 3D Lateral Confinement

The honeycomb cell walls restrict lateral outward movement of granular fill under vertical load. Hoop stress is generated inside the cell, improving the shear strength and bearing modulus of infill materials, preventing rutting, bulging and sliding.

2. Uniform Load Distribution

Disperse concentrated wheel loads over a wider subsoil area, reduce vertical stress transmitted to underlying weak soil and control differential settlement.

3. Flexible Mattress Effect

The HDPE cellular structure can adapt to minor foundation deformation, frost heave and slight uneven settlement without brittle cracking, different from rigid concrete structures.

4. Drainage Function (Perforated Type)

Perforated HDPE sheets release pore water pressure, reduce hydrostatic pressure and allow plant root penetration, suitable for ecological slope and water fluctuation zone projects. Non-perforated textured HDPE sheets increase friction between cell wall and aggregates for heavy-load subgrade.
